Faith is universal. Our specific methods for understanding it are arbitrary. Some of us pray to Jesus, some of us go to Mecca, some of us study subatomic particles. In the end we are all just searching for truth, that which is greater than ourselves.

Just remember, we have a lot of people in this country who might seem odd to you if you met them face-to-face, especially if they were on your porch, leaving tracts in your mailbox and interrupting your dinner to tell you all about Jesus. These are people who are so devout and brainwashed that they will treat people like absolute shit and feel like they are being holy while berating anyone who so much as doubts them. They are a forceful and large majority yet act like any other opinion is an all out attack on their way of life. We have scary peoples here, let me tell you. I’m sure you’ve heard it all, but let me do a quick recap:

  • Millions believe that a book of parables and stories that was written decades after the so-called events would have happened (events that have very little or no mention in any of the historical records of the time) by people with very big agendas, that has been edited over thousands of years (from wonky and multiple translations) by other men with big agendas is the literal and final word of god, yet a lot of them have never even read it and only know the parts told to them by, yet again, other people with big agendas who pick and choose and take out of context the parts that suit them.
  • These people ignore thousands and thousands of volumes of repeatable experiments and proven scientific theory merely because it doesn’t match with the ideas of a group of scientifically illiterate storytellers from thousands of years ago.
  • At the same time, these people trust those same story tellers when they say a man who lived to be 950 years old had built a boat big enough to hold a pair of every living creature to ride out a storm created by their merciful and loving god so he could kill almost every living thing on the planet to, supposedly, wipe the slate clean. Being omnipotent, this means that at the moment of creation, he knew his flawed creation would eventually get this bad and he would have to destroy it, which, in his mercy, he allowed to happen rather than, say, fix it at the start and save the wholesale slaughter of every man, woman and child on the planet. So, this merciful god therefor created all of humanity, allowed it to grow and become evil and then he spitefully murdered them all except one family left behind to inbreed and create a new human race. This also includes creating those darker skinned people via a magical curse after the ancient drunkard and head of the family was embarrassed that his son saw his cock-and-balls during a wine-induced blackout. Did I mention the book also condones enslaving those cursed peoples?
  • We have people who come door-to-door and will even talk to your children, trying to ‘spread the word’ of god, who will interrupt your dinner to leave you hate filled tracts while smiling, dully and glassy-eyed like a Valium addict on a bender, as they talk about god’s love, yet will treat you like shit, will stop letting their kids play with yours, will try and get you fired or ruin your life if you mention the word “atheist” or even “Humanist”.
  • These people are taught from near birth that questioning, critical thinking, inquisitiveness, science, disbelief and sex - especially for pleasure or with the same gender - are all evil, vile, horrible things that ruin you and society. Meanwhile, they teach these children that fear, guilt, blind obedience, fake morals and moral superiority, hatred of rationality, hatred of science and utter and contemptuous hatred for atheist as well as to unquestioningly give assets to a corrupt organization of rich, old men who have famously covered up pedophilic-rapists and money laundering are all holy and divine and will lead to a blessed and happy life.

I think the base of it is brainwashing children from a young age to avoid any kind of critical thought or doubt and to feel guilt and fear at anything that might make them question the strangle-hold that the church has on their lives. I don’t know if, say, The Church of England is really making a forceful attempt at indoctrinating children into a life of anti-science delusions or classically conditioning children that certain keywords, like evolution or atheist, are very, very bad. I’ve seen firsthand how creepy and vile fundamentalism can be. Thankfully, religiously, I’m from a pretty lenient family who went to a pretty lenient Roman Catholic church and lives in a pretty lenient area. Move out of the city and into the country and it’s a whole different story.

The world changes, it evolves, we look back 50 years and think how ignorant we were, how we breached such basic human rights and freedoms. As the older generations die, with them dies their ignorance, their ‘religious values’ and their inability to accept change. Same-sex marriage is inevitable. It may take two or three generations for the ignorance to sift its way out of society completely, but we can no longer ignore it. With the age of information now dawned upon us, it is unavoidable that the new generations will self-educate themselves, we will no longer pull the blanket over their eyes.

Right now, it is raining methane on Titan. The planet Uranus, apparently trying to live up to its name, is orbiting the sun sideways, while Venus spins backwards. There are stars exploding, black holes gorging, galaxies colliding. And here we sit, on a planet pock-marked by collisions, rocked by earthquakes, shaken by storms. A planet doomed to be fried in radiation as it’s magnetic fields collapse, until finally the sun grows into a red giant and leaves nothing of the Earth but dust. Here we sit, glasses on our noses, inhalers in our pockets, braces on our teeth, waiting to die as our heart muscle expires, our cells decide to grow forever, or a blood vessel just pops, and sometimes in unnatural ways, too. Here we sit, and some of us say, behold, look at the order of it all.

I’m just a guy that never tried
I’m just a stupid fuck with brilliant luck
and sometimes a bright idea
So shower me in a chorus of compliments
and verse I don’t deserve
I might run but I’ll never hide

Your impulsivity is a gift – impulses are your key to the miraculous,
Your distractibility – is an artifact of your inspired creativity,
Your mood swings – reflect the natural pulse of life, they give you unstoppable energy when you’re high and deep soulful insight when you’re low,
Been diagnosed with a “disorder”? That’s society’s latest way to deny it’s own illness by pointing the finger at you. Your addictive personality is just a symptom of your vast underused capacity for heroic, creative expression and spiritual connection. your utter lack of repression, your wide eyed idealism, your unmitigated open mind – didn’t anyone ever tell you?! these are the traits shared by the greatest pioneers and visionaries and innovators, revolutionaries, procrastinators and drama queens, activists on the social scene, space cadets and mavericks, philosophers and derelicts, business suits flying fighter jets, football stars and sex addicts, celebrities with ADD, alcoholics who seek novelty, first responders – prophets and saints, mystics and change agents.

Children are told this cruel lie from the moment they’re born, that they will never ever die, and that they’ll be reunited with everyone they ever cared about. And inevitably pesky reality shows how absurd that idea is, and we have situations like the one you’re experiencing now. If you had never been promised this ridiculous notion of an afterlife, you wouldn’t have to deal with this sadness now. You would have been taught to live life fully and courageously, because this one life is all you get. But one great life is still worth a lot.

Christianity prepares its followers as if this is some “practice” life. Some trial for the next. And I feel that this is where religion robs people of the privilege to REALLY live life like it’s quickly running out. Because it is.
